About Geibikei Gorge ― how to enjoy a walk

A gorge in southeastern Iwate where ~100m limestone cliffs continue for ~2km along the Satetsugawa River. One of Japan's 100 Landscapes, also chosen in "Japan's 100 Soundscapes" and "100 Top Tourist Sites" — a smaller of the "3 great Japan gorge landscapes."

~5 min walk from JR Ofunato Line "Geibikei Station." The signature: pole-rowed boat ride down the river (~90 min, 1,800 yen). The boatmen's "Geibi Oiwake" song echoes in the spirit. In winter (Dec-Feb), kotatsu boats let you enjoy snow scenery.

Smoking rules and things to watch around Geibikei Gorge

Tourist areas across Iwate have widely adopted street-smoking bans, with fines for violations. Indoors, the revised Health Promotion Act mandates smoke-free environments by default; smokers must use a designated smoking room, a heated-tobacco-only room, or an outdoor designated smoking spot.

The entire gorge is a Designated National Place of Scenic Beauty and special protection zone with strict fire prohibition. Boats are entirely non-smoking — smoking during the boat ride is strictly forbidden (boatmen will warn). Smoke only at the designated area in front of Geibikei Station or smoking corner at the boarding entrance.

How to find smoking areas near Geibikei Gorge

  • Check designated smoking areas inside or in front of major stations first
  • Use indoor smoking rooms in large shopping complexes, department stores, and airports — weather-proof and reliable
  • Heated-tobacco-only rooms sometimes allow eating and drinking; filter by your device type
