Frequently asked questions

Q. Can I search for smoking areas by station?
A. Yes. Pick from 54 stations across 35 prefectures to view designated smoking spots inside and around (within a 5–10 minute walk) each station, on a map and list.
Q. Which stations are covered?
A. Coverage focuses on Shinkansen/limited-express stops (Tokyo, Shin-Osaka, Kyoto, Hakata, etc.), major terminals (Shinjuku, Shibuya, Umeda, etc.), tourist-hub stations (Gion-Shijo, Miyajimaguchi, etc.), airport-access stations and onsen-resort stations (Kinugawa-Onsen, Beppu, etc.).
Q. Can I filter for IQOS / glo (heated tobacco) areas?
A. On each station page, use the tobacco-type filter and select "E-cigarette / heated tobacco" to show only areas that allow heated tobacco.
Q. Is station search free?
A. Yes — station search, map search, favourites, and pin submissions are all free. You can use every feature without signing up.
Q. How often is the data updated?
A. Station data is regenerated every 24 hours via ISR (Incremental Static Regeneration). Spot data is updated continuously by community contributions.
Q. Are there smoking rooms inside station ticket gates?
A. Some Shinkansen stops (Tokyo, Shin-Osaka, Kyoto, Hakata, etc.) have smoking rooms inside the gates or on Shinkansen platforms. Look for "inside-gate" or "platform" tags on each station page. Note that most JR East conventional-line stations have been entirely smoke-free since 2009.
Q. Where is street smoking banned around stations?
A. Most major-city station fronts (23 wards of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Yokohama, etc.) are designated street-smoking-prohibited zones. Fines range from JPY 1,000–2,000. Please always use designated smoking spots.
Q. What if I can’t find a smoking area near the station?
A. Convenience stores, cafes and hotels around stations sometimes have indoor smoking rooms. Expand the map search radius from 500m to 1km to see more options. If you find a smoking spot not in our list, please use the "Submit" button to help us add it.
